Sabre Springs Community Information

The city of Scripps Ranch was first envisioned by newspaperman E.W. Scripps when he came to California in 1890 to see his ailing sister. When she recovered, Scripps boarded a steamboat and headed for San Diego. Sixteen miles outside of town, Scripps was so impressed by the climate and foliage that he decided to build a home. Shortly after, his half sister Ellen Browning Scripps joined him and together they purchased 400 acres of land for $5,000. Construction on the house began and in 1900, the completed ranch became his family’s year-round home. Scripps and his family enjoyed a fabulous quality of life in the area and new residents today flock to the area for the same reason.

Scripps Ranch offers residents a variety of recreational activities including soccer, baseball and basketball. Those looking to “tee off” can hone their skills on one of the many nearby golf courses. Many residents enjoy membership in local clubs and organizations. A writer's group, computer, garden and music clubs, and a Welcome Wagon Club are a few of the organizations that allow locals to pursue their interests while enjoying active social lives. Scouting remains very popular with young boys and girls and the library serves as a sort of community center for adults.

Nearby Lake Miramar adds additional excitement to the area and offers fishing, picnicking, and boating facilities. The lake is surrounded by a five-mile running, skating, and biking path, providing an opportunity for outdoor exercise in a peaceful atmosphere. The city is home to the annual Scripps Ranch Fourth-of-July Run and Ride. Runners and walkers can choose from a 10K race around Lake Miramar or a 2-mile Fun Run
